ADDICTIONS

It is important to note that only gambling disorder and alcohol use disorder are currently recognized as official diagnoses. However, addictive behaviors such as sugar or food addiction, exercise addiction, codependency, shopping addiction, and workaholism can have similar effects and compulsive tendencies as diagnosed addictions. In my practice, I use evidence-based methods from cognitive-behavioral therapy and positive psychology to help individuals with addictive behaviors overcome their challenges and develop sustainable coping mechanisms.

"THE BRAIN HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED"

The addiction and substance abuse are controlled by the brain’s reward system. Thanks to the reward system, it feels pleasurable to engage in activities such as drinking, eating, having sex, shopping, working, and gambling. The neurotransmitter dopamine is responsible for governing these processes.

However, the connections between neurons can be altered. A person who is addicted may have difficulty feeling pleasure during activities other than their addiction. Additionally, stronger stimuli will be needed over time.

The addiction is acquired, like many other lifestyle diseases. And it is progressive, meaning it worsens over time. The changes that occur in the brain are essentially the same for different types of addiction, and the treatment looks similar.

Research is ongoing to find ways to completely heal addiction, but currently, there is no such medicine or treatment available.

Part of the treatment involves learning to abstain from the substance or behavior and another part involves learning to live with the sensitivity to relapse. However, on an individual level, some people have been able to return to a reasonable level after some time and do not need to completely abstain.

Those who undergo addiction treatment with me generally have an otherwise stable situation.

I work with CBT, the method with the strongest evidence for successful addiction treatment.

I know that you are already motivated for change, but I also know that motivation may wane at times. I will help you through those moments. The important thing is that you have found your way here and that we follow your desire for an improved situation.

I will provide knowledge and the best available treatment for addiction.

In addiction treatment with me, there are no finger-pointing, no moralizing, and absolutely no coercion. If the addiction is alcohol, I am also trained in ”controlled drinking.” It works for some but not for everyone. If this is something you believe in or desire, I will provide you with all the information about the odds and risks involved.

Do you want to know more about what the treatment may entail? I would like to know more about your situation. I look forward to your email!
